Ōwairaka, also known as Te Ahi kā a Rakataura, is a volcanic hill that erupted an estimated 120,000 years ago. It is one of many ancestral mountains with significant pā that dot Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, though much of the historical remnants were destroyed by quarrying and water reservoirs. Vehicles are restricted on the loop road to recognise the cultural significance of the maunga, which has been returned to mana whenua as part of a 2014 Treaty of Waitangi redress.
