Colour is alive and well along Karangahape Road, affectionately nicknamed K’ Road. You’ll literally see this vibrancy in the vintage stores and lively bar scene – and on the outfits of the artistic souls and fashionistas who hang out here. While Karangapape Road stretches from Upper Queen Street to Ponsonby Road, the retail heart spills from the gorgeous St Kevins Arcade heritage mall and surrounding blocks.  

But if there’s one thing that really stands out on Karangahape Road, it’s the vintage scene. Humble op shops sit happily next to curated secondhand stores and antique décor shops. Get a taste of everything at Crushes, a concept store with beautiful vintage picks and NZ-made gifts, or head to Vixen Vintage to find your next retro dress or worn-in leather jacket.  

Popping into the historic St Kevins Arcade mall is a must for the atmosphere alone – though you'll also find pre-loved wares, mid-century furniture and some of the best dining spots in the ‘hood. After some classic vinyl? Flick through records and CDs like the good old days at Flying Out, a real gem in the city for music fans.  

No two stores are the same and some enjoy pushing boundaries. You may be asking yourself if it's a retail store or art studio – with so many creatives here, there’s no simple answer. Explore the ceramics, clothing and gallery space at Tür or head down to Babelogue for a curated mix of artwork and vintage homewares.   

High fashion and designer duds are also in the mix, with Karangahape Road home to creatives specialising in jewellery design, handmade clothing and even bridal gowns. Discover local talent at clothing stores Maaike + co. and Hailwood, sitting fittingly amongst the arts studios and galleries the road is famous for.
